MISCHA’S GARDEN has been submitted to the Wild & Scenic Film Festival

The film follows our cat, Mischa, as he wanders through his rewilded domain alive with pollinators, native plants, and wildlife. His feline observations contrast the quiet patience of nature—as observed, appreciated and respected by acclaimed Québec filmmaker, Amélie Hardy, and cinematographer, Myriam Payette, who documented it in their award-winning film A WOLF IN THE SUBURBS—with the heedlessly destructive enforcement actions of municipal authorities. I’m pleased to announce that MISCHA’S GARDEN has been submitted to the Wild & Scenic Film Festival scheduled in February, 2027. Emerging from the broader story behind the Ruck v. In 1996, the Ontario Court of Justice ruled municipal Tall Grass and Weeds By-Laws to be void, invalid, unenforceable and in contravention of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms which guarantees Freedom of Expression [Ref. Bell v. Toronto (City)]. Yet, the City of Mississauga Council "deems tall grass and weeds to be a public nuisance" and continues to enforce its Nuisance Weeds and Tall Grass Control By-Law 125-2017 on homeowner private property based solely on "Anonymous Neighbour Complaints". Ontario Court Finds Mississauga Lawn By-law Unconstitutional Under Charter

On January 6, 2026, the Ontario Superior Court released its judgment following last summer’s hearing in Ruck v. City of Mississauga . The Court ruled that Mississauga’s Tall Grass and Nuisance Weeds By-law 125-2017 violates Freedom of Expression under the Canadian Charter , thereby recognizing that re-wilding and ecological stewardship on private property can be constitutionally protected activity. While the decision does not award damages or formally vindicate the City’s enforcement actions, it marks an important legal milestone for  the Urban Rewilding Movement and civic freedoms in Canada.
