THIS is Cross-Country !

Filmed some 40 years ago in Ontario, Alberta and Finland, This is Cross-Country! is somewhat dated but still a motivational and technical "refresher" to a stimulating winter activity ... 😉

Orchard Heights Walk Run Bike Roll & SKI !

Aside from slush and grass coming through in spots, the 5cm of snow in Orchard Heights Park provided just enough incentive to get out on the skinny skiis for a few loops in the bright afternoon sunshine ...

HELLO, City of Mississauga Mayor Crombie and councillors ??? "According to Mississauga's 2018 Cycling Master Plan, the city had 51 kilometers of bike lanes with plans to add another 56 in coming years ... 🤔🙄 This compares to ~587 kilometers of on-street biking infrastructure in Toronto in 2018, with plans to add more than 500 kilometers as part of a ten-year plan launched in 2018." ... 🤔😮🙂👍 How to (Quickly) Build a Cycling City - Paris #OrchardHeightsPark #OrchardHeightsBridge #EtobicokeCreekTrail #DoesCyclingMoveYou  #SaugaCommunityRides    #MississaugaCyclingMasterPlan #ActiveTransportation #SafeCycling #Mississauga #walk #bike #parks #publicspace #openstreets #880Cities

Physical inactivity is a major contributor to these problems. Physical activity is beneficial to health at all ages. It is especially important to the healthy development of children and young people; active ageing can make a dramatic difference to the well-being of older people. Active living also positively contributes to economic prosperity and social cohesion in cities. Taking part in physical activity increases opportunities for socialization, networking and cultural identity. Promoting physical activity requires the involvement and cooperation of all levels of government (national, regional and local), with clea

IMAGINE ... ORCHARD HEIGHTS PARK

Image
IMAGINE … if the Orchard Heights Park access road was closed year-round to random automobiles and trucks (coming from who knows where), as was favoured by a majority of residents in the straw poll posted on the OHHA FB Group Page back in June, 2021. IMAGINE … if the Orchard Heights Park parking lot was closed year-round to random automobiles and trucks (coming from who knows where), thereby eliminating the garbage and refuse frequently left behind by visitors after rendezvousing, lunching, tail-gate partying, picnicking, dog-walking, etc. IMAGINE … if Orchard Heights residents (especially children and teenagers) had a Multi-Sport Facility in Orchard Heights Park for healthy fun and fitness activities like pick-up Basketball, Mini-Soccer, Street Hockey, Outdoor Workouts, etc. Whether you are moved to imagine converting the Orchard Heights Park parking lot into a Multi-Sport Facility -- or not -- take a few moments to register your views by submitting the IMAGINE  ... Suburbs that don't Suck

Image
Car-dependent suburbs suck. But that doesn't mean that all suburbs suck. It is possible to build suburbs that don't suck, and the US and Canada used to design great suburbs all the time. But even though these pre-war suburbs are loved by many people, and in huge demand, they're illegal to build today. #OrchardHeightsPark #OrchardHeightsBridge #EtobicokeCreekTrail #DoesCyclingMoveYou  #SaugaCommunityRides    #MississaugaCyclingMasterPlan #ActiveTransportation #SafeCycling #Mississauga #walk #bike #parks #publicspace #openstreets #880Cities

How disconnected bicycle routes are ruining the bike-friendliness of our cities

Image
Intro by Shifter:   "If your city is like mine, there have been many initiatives over the years to improve its bike-friendliness, from painted bike lanes to pathways to separated bike lanes. But if you're city is really like mine then many of those routes remain islands unto themselves, disconnected from each other and untethered to a more comprehensive plan intended to help cyclists really get around the city.  So after exploring these disconnections, I have a theory that there are four different types of disconnections that can be easily fixed to make our cities more bike-friendly. Here they are: 0:00 Introduction 1:15 Roads (pathways) to nowhere 2:30 It was too hard so we gave up 4:29 C'mon cyclists, get real 6:10 WTF Gaps 7:20 The magic that happens when gaps are filled #cycling #bike #commuting ..." #OrchardHeightsPark #OrchardHeightsBridge #EtobicokeCreekTrail #DoesCyclingMoveYou  #SaugaCommunityRides    #MississaugaCyclingMasterPlan #ActiveTransportation #SafeC

Orchard Heights Community Fall Colours Ride - November 7, 2021

Image
Sunday, November 7th was probably the peak of this year's Fall Colours to enjoy, given the subsequent days of rain and wind which stripped much of the foliage. In case you missed this Orchard Heights Community Fall Colours Ride, the video captures the essence of a beautiful time of year to enjoy walking, running, biking and rolling along the scenic trails virtually at the doorstep of every Orchard Heights resident. Starting from Orchard Heights, the route led down Dixie Road to Marie Curtis Park and followed the Waterfront Trail eastbound to Col. Samuel Smith Park with its expansive views from the man-made peninsula jutting out into Lake Ontario . The return leg included a side spur up the Etobicoke Creek Trail through tall Pines, Maples and
